Cordelia is dejected by her inability to find success as an actress, and avoids talking to her popular friends from high school. When she finds her apartment full of roaches, she tries to take Doyle up on his offer of letting her stay with him – but he's preoccupied by a demon visitor wanting to collect a debt. Instead, she stays with Angel.
Apartment Hunting
Doyle finds Cordelia in Angel's apartment the next morning and believes they slept together. He gets upset at Angel because he wanted to ask Cordy out, but then learns that she was just having apartment problems. Doyle learns that Cordelia gave his address to a "friend," which is how the demon found him. Angel agrees to get rid of the demon if Doyle finds Cordy a new apartment.
Cordy and Doyle go apartment hunting with very little luck, until suddenly they find a very nice apartment at a suspiciously cheap price. Meanwhile, Angel convinces the demon to take the money Doyle owes rather than killing Doyle.
A Malicious Ghost
During her first night in her new apartment, Cordelia feels the bed lift and sees objects fly around – the acts of an angry ghost. She refuses to leave, however, because she's grown attached to the apartment; so she and the others research who the ghost is and how to get rid of it. Angel asks Kate for some help with the police records, thinking the ghost may be an unavenged murder victim, but discovers instead a number of suicides in the apartment.
The ghost fakes an answering machine message from Angel to lure Cordelia back to the apartment. The ghost is an elderly woman who believes Cordy is the woman his son wanted to marry, and whom she must kill to protect him. She tries to make Cordelia kill herself, but Angel and Doyle arrive in time to save her.
Cleansing the Apartment
The three attempt to cast out the ghost, but Cordy is too weakened to perform the spell. Before they can finish, the demon who came after Doyle returns – with friends. The ghost, angry at the intruders, throws knives around, accidentally helping them defeat the demons.
Cordelia suddenly grabs a lampstand and smashes through a brick wall. It turns out that the ghost wasn't murdered after all: rather, she holed up her son, alive, inside the wall to prevent him from getting married, then suffered a fatal heart attack. The son's ghost obliterates her ghost, and Cordelia is left with a friendly, invisible companion in her apartment: Phantom Dennis.
